A History
of Rusty’s Market
With the milestone
of thirty years having been achieved in 2005 the owners of
Rusty’s Market, Gilligan’s Backpackers Hotel &
Resort, decided it was time to record the history of the now
famous weekly event.
The result is an excellent hard cover A5
coffee table book, a beautifully photographed & written
history of the market.
Rusty’s history is linked to the origins
of Cairns & the book traces the beginnings of the fascinating
Malay Town of the 1900’s. It looks at the development
of Chinatown, on which the present market is now built &
it profiles the man who created the market, Rusty Rees.
There are wonderful images of the more colourful
stall holders, visitors & stunning photos of exotics fruit
& vegetables.
It is without doubt a must have book for
anyone who has strolled down the aisles at Rusty’s &
marveled at the magnificent displays of tropical fruit, vegetables,
bric-a-brac, craft & food stalls.
The book is available at $10
a copy plus handling & shipping costs.
